A quick Google search of the names of doctors in the United States will give you a sense of just how far-flung the country really is in the global race for medical expertise.
That’s because, for the most part, the vast majority of the doctors on this list are located in the country of their birth, with only a handful from other countries (mostly South Korea and Taiwan).
And even if you live somewhere other than the US, you may have to dig to find them.
That said, a quick Google image search will yield a surprising number of countries with top doctors.
That may be because they’re so widely spread across the globe, but it could also be that, despite their relative isolation, countries like South Korea have a number of top doctors who also have expertise in the fields of neurology and medicine.
As of this writing, the top doctors in South Korea are all located in Seoul.
But there are other examples of doctors living abroad that could help you narrow down your search for the best medical minds.
For example, while we can’t pinpoint which countries have the most top doctors, we can point you in the direction of the countries with the most experts in neurology.
In our list, the number one spot goes to Switzerland, followed by the Netherlands, Finland, and Sweden.
In terms of medicine, the United Kingdom has a doctor named Dr. Robert Walker, and it’s not a stretch to imagine that a number in this list of top neurologists will be in the same boat.
But this is not a definitive list, as the countries are not as evenly spread across geographic regions.
While it’s possible that you’re able to find doctors who have residency in your own country, you should probably start by researching the country’s residency requirements, which may give you some idea of how well you’re going to be able to get the best care in your home country.
Most residency programs require you to be at least 30 years old and complete a minimum of 40 hours of training per year in the field of neurologic neurology, medicine, neurology-oncology, and neurosurgery.
These requirements will likely limit the number of doctors you’re likely to find who have the expertise to help you in your chosen field.
For instance, if you’re looking to become a neurosurgeon in the US and have a bachelor’s degree in neurologic surgery, the residency requirements are more lenient than those of Switzerland.
If you have a medical degree from another country, but not a residency in neurological surgery, you’ll likely have to complete the residency requirement in neurologics, neurologic pathology, and pathology in addition to your degree.
So if you plan on becoming a neurologist in the future, you’d best be prepared to work hard to meet those requirements.
The list of countries we’ve found that have top neurologist physicians is not exhaustive, but we’re not sure of the exact number.
Some countries have fewer than 10 neurologists per 100,000 people, and in some countries, as few as five per 100 people.
And as of this posting, only five countries in the world have at least 50 neurologists.
The number of neurologists in each country is generally fairly high, but there are a few exceptions, like Brazil and South Korea, which have fewer neurologists than average.
Still, it’s clear that there are some great doctors in some of the most densely populated and populous nations in the globe.
The Bottom LineThere are plenty of ways to look at the rankings above, but here’s one that we’ve used as a guide to help identify the best neurologists and surgeons in each of the 33 countries we looked at.
While the number doesn’t come close to the number that is available in the private sector, there are enough doctors in each health care system to have a very strong picture of how the health care landscape is evolving in a given country.
You can see how the rankings look in this interactive visualization:The rankings below are based on information from MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library.
